What is protective shield in a antivirus software?

Antivirus softwares have an engine known as 'shield' or 'protective shield' whose primary job is protecting your pc from malware. In other words, it detects, stops and protects your PC from Viruses.

Having an AV which only scans your computer and cleans it, is not sufficient ,because any pc which is connected to internet is in danger. So AV softwares should have a mechanism which prevents malware from intruding into the pc; and this mechanism is otherwise called as 'shield'.

Some AV softwares also refer to this shield as 'engine'.

Extra Information:-

Let me add some more information for you(assuming u aren't aware of).

Malware means any malicious softwares, which includes, viruses, worms, trojan horses etc. They usually spread through emails , internet user groups or LAN. So what these AV softwares do is, they have a shield/engine running constantly in system tray(startup), which monitors the incoming and outgoing files and scans for any suspicious activity. If they encounter any such malware, they immediately warn the user and side by side quarentine them. They basically impersonate security guards at the gate.

Hope this answers your question!
