Both are necessay. Do not confuse spyware with viruses!
anti spyware and antivirus are as different things as spyware and viruses. some companies make some ''set'' things where you can find antispyware, antivirus, firewall and real-time protection all in one. both anti spyware and antivirus are needed, cos anti spyware most likely won't find/erase viruses, and antivirus most likely will leave spyware at your computer. imho both programs are necessary, cos even if you don't have internet connection you might bring some nasty things into your pc from usb key, cd, etc.

One stops the virus from infecting your machine and the other one stops any spyware and if you computer is running slower then normal you need to run your spyware program and get rid of the spyware.
