Does installing antivirus software fix a malware problem?

I think based upon my question it's obvious I don't know what malware means lol but I was told by someone that the reason the icons keep dissappearing from my desktop and porno pop-ups happen on random sites (I actually wasn't looking at porn) is because of the malware. How can I fix this? And is malfunctioning malware going to hurt my computer in the long run? Wow I feel like an idiot I plan on majoring in computer engineering. Me thinks I should think about a change in courses lmao.
