The normal process I have used before is telling me that it cannot find the server, and yet all my other internet facilities are working fine.

thats because the latest virus's protect themselfs from being removed, and won't even let you go to any antivirus website , until you find the virus and remove it from your computer , usually by doing a system restore to before when you got the virus ,then you can update your virus protction ,than do a scan , then remove the virus

Try AVG it's free and very good better then some you pay for.
wait a couple of hours and try again the server for your antivirus may be busy or they may be working on the update site of your antivirus
get the new afg from grisoft its free
perhaps the server is down, try again later or tomorrow
