In my experience in computer technology retail, by far the most popular, expensive, and therefore, best anti-virus software on the market to date are the Symantec products. Symantec makes the Norton series including Norton AntiVirus. Symantec has entire labs dedicated to researching and solving the most recent viruses that have just been released. With new virus definitions everyday, you really cannot beat the efficiency. As far as price goes, however, it is normally $39.99 for Norton AntiVirus and I believe $69.99 for what I use and recommend, especially with broadband subscribers, Norton Internet Security. Not only do you have to pay the one-time fee to buy the product, but you also must eventually subscribe to the update service, which, of course, costs more money.

For non-frequent computer users who are not at risk of getting the most recent virus, I would recomment McAfee AntiVirus. It's a little cheaper.
I personally have AVG Free. Most people like it because it does'nt cost anything, it's easy to use, and it has alot of features.
